Like the socialization question, some doubts about homeschooling continue in spite of the evidence that they are false fears. One such doubt is high school at home. Four decades of homeschooled students graduating from high school and succeeding in college, business, and other areas has not changed the view.
To help parents overcome doubts, 7 Sisters Homeschool has developed the Homeschool High School: You Can Do It! online course.
The 15 lesson video course includes a written summary of the material and an approximately 10-minute video. Vicki Tillman, a 20-year homeschool veteran and curriculum developer for 7 Sisters, gives the video lesson.
You can listen to each lesson without watching. For example, if you use your smartphone you can listen to the lesson while walking or doing other exercise. Vicki’s natural delivery makes you feel like you’re listening to a friend over the phone. However, there is background music that detracts from Vicki’s warm tone.
The course includes
- Why Homeschool High School?
- What Must Be Covered?
- What Is a Credit and How Do You Earn One?
- How Do You Earn a Language Arts Credit?
- What Are Levels for High School Credit?
- What Are Some Expectations for Student Achievement Each Year?
- Whom Do You Need?
- What Is Your Vision? What Is Your Mission?
- How Do You Set Your 4-Year Goals?
- How Do You Set Your 1-Year Goal?
- How Do You Match Curriculum to Your Student? How Do You Know Your Homeschooler’s Strengths and Weaknesses?
- How Do You Create a Transcript?
- How Do You Assign Grades and GPA?
- How Do You Choose Electives?
- How Can You Combine Credits?
The self-paced course does require you to go through the lessons in order. So, if you need to know how to create a transcript, you need to do 12 lessons preceding it. For some homeschool parents, the order may not be quite right. Allowing to listeners to pick needed lessons would be a plus.
In my years of homeschooling, three subjects are of greatest concern: Math, lab science, and foreign language. Sadly Homeschool High School: You Can Do It! Does not cover these areas.
The course is a good place to start your planning for high school in general and for each year of high school. It will definitely help you overcome any fears you may have. It will also give you the information you need for those who will question your decision to continue through high school. At the low price of $35, it’s like having access to a whole conference in your home and at your leisure.
Your encouragement doesn’t need to stop when you finish the Homeschool High School course. You can get weekly inspiration with the 7 Sisters Homeschool Highschool Podcast. Vicki Tillman and Sabrina Justison share can-do skills. Upcoming episodes, on Tuesdays at 9 a.m. EST, include having fun with your high schooler and the often-asked question “Will My Kid Get Into College?”
